Growing up in a family that relied on horses for traditional farm work, Mark developed a deep appreciation for these magnificent animals. His neighbor, veterinarian Dr. Stolwijk, became an early mentor, introducing him to the basics of veterinary care. Whether assisting with horses, sheep, or dogs, Mark’s formative years were filled with hands-on learning, which laid the foundation for his future career.
This early exposure, combined with his family’s practical use of horses for tasks like plowing fields and hauling hay, instilled a profound respect for their strength and utility. Mark credits these experiences for shaping his understanding of equine management and care.

Building Expertise Through Experience
Mark’s equestrian career took off when he worked internationally as a groom, supporting top riders across the globe. After 15 years of success, he joined the esteemed Equine Clinic De Watermolen under the guidance of Dr. Jan Greve. During his nine years at the clinic, Mark gained invaluable knowledge from leading veterinarians, including Dutch team veterinarian Drs. Arie Hoogendoorn. This period cemented his expertise in equine care and sports medicine.
The Schachinger Method: A Turning Point
Mark’s journey took a transformative turn when he trained at the Academy Paard en Hond with Karin Groot Jebbink. There, he mastered the Schachinger Method, a groundbreaking technique inspired by dry needling, specifically adapted for non-veterinarians. Developed by Andrea Schachinger, this method focuses on treating horses’ myofascial pain—stiffness and adhesions in muscles and fascia—using specialized tools rather than needles.
Mark’s own experience with dry needling for chronic back pain deepened his belief in the method. Andrea’s treatments spared him from surgery and allowed him to continue competing with his horse, Luna, at Level 3 dressage. Motivated by his recovery, Mark became the first male graduate of the Schachinger Method training and introduced it to the United States.
What is Myofascial Equine Therapy?
Myofascial Equine Therapy (MET) is a comprehensive treatment approach that addresses restricted movement in horses caused by stiffened muscles and fascia. Using the Schachinger equine dry-needling method, this therapy restores suppleness, reduces pain, and prevents injuries. Widely recognized by veterinarians, chiropractors, and physiotherapists, MET is now a vital tool for equine athletes.
Mark applies this therapy to help horses regain mobility and achieve peak performance. His approach emphasizes collaboration with veterinarians, farriers, and saddle fitters to ensure a holistic recovery plan tailored to each horse.
