From saddles to bridles to halters to tall boots, all tack is expensive in the horse world. Therefore, to get the best bang for your buck, it is crucial that your tack is maintained well. Miranda Lindenlauf breaks down the key differences between modern tack and its traditional counterparts, care techniques and storage tips to make sure your tack last longer.
For those well-versed in tack care, maintaining the integrity of your equipment requires a nuanced approach. Here are some tips to ensure longevity and performance, especially considering the evolution in tack materials and design.
Key Considerations for Modern vs. Traditional Tack
Traditional saddles are typically crafted from stiffer leather, which, while durable, often requires more robust conditioning and regular oiling to maintain flexibility.
Modern saddles on the other hand often feature softer leather with added foam and decorative stitches. These components necessitate different care strategies. Be cautious with oils around stitching and glue areas, as excess moisture can weaken these elements and cause them to deteriorate.

Learn about techniques to improve your tack’s longevity.
I’m Miranda Lindenlauf, founder of LindenBrook Saddlery, and my journey into this craft began with a deep-rooted love for horses. After college, I started an apprenticeship with Ann McGrail at The Creative Saddler, where I began with hand-sewing leather straps and repairing turnout halters and bridles. Under Ann’s guidance, I learned to create custom bridles and work on saddles, blending creativity with functionality to enhance their strength and beauty. Ann also introduced me to the intricacies of saddle fitting and sent me to the U.K. to complete my apprenticeship and craft my own saddle. When I relocated to Camden, South Carolina, I established LindenBrook Saddlery to offer expert leather repair and custom work, helping fellow equestrians with both practical and aesthetic needs.
