Grooms Supporting Grooms: A Conversation About Barn Management With Nanci Snyder

Working as a groom or barn manager can sometimes feel isolating, but many people in the profession share the same joys, questions, challenges, and hardships. Join experienced barn manager Nanci Snyder and HorseGrooms Communication & Leadership Coach Danielle Aamodt on August 25 for a private, interactive conversation about barn management, communication, workload, and how grooming teams operate. Share your experiences, learn from others, and discover that you may have more in common than you realize.

Working as a groom or barn manager can sometimes feel isolating. Even when you are surrounded by horses and people all day, you may still wonder whether anyone else faces the same questions, frustrations, responsibilities, and difficult moments.

That is why these conversations matter.

On Tuesday, August 25 at 7:00 PM Eastern Time, HorseGrooms invites grooms and barn managers to join a private and interactive online conversation about barn management, communication, and the different ways grooming teams operate.

The conversation will be guided by highly experienced barn manager Nanci Snyder. HorseGrooms Communication & Leadership Coach Danielle Aamodt of Enso Equine will also attend and contribute her expertise if the conversation moves toward communication, leadership, or relationships within the team.

HorseGrooms Communication & Leadership Coach Danielle Aamodt will be attending the online conversation.

Sharing the Challenges and the Joys

Grooms and barn managers working in different countries, disciplines, and types of barns may organize their work in very different ways. However, many experience the same joys, questions, challenges, and sometimes hardships.

It can be valuable to hear that someone on the other side of the country, or even the other side of the world, has struggled with the same situation. It can also be reassuring to discover that you are not the only person questioning whether something in your workplace is normal, wondering how to improve communication, or trying to manage too many responsibilities at once.

These conversations are not only about difficulties. They are also an opportunity to talk about what we enjoy, what makes us proud of our work, which systems work well, and what we have learned through experience.

By speaking openly and listening to one another, we can exchange practical ideas, learn from different approaches, and remind each other that we are not alone.

An Experienced Barn Manager Leading the Conversation

Nanci Snyder has worked, studied, and traveled with some of the top barns in the United States and Europe. Throughout her career, she has gained knowledge from leading riders, trainers, veterinarians, farriers, barn managers, and fellow grooms.

Since 2013, Nanci has also been involved with the USHJA Emerging Athletes Program as a stable manager and clinician, helping young equestrians develop their stable management, horse care, and horsemanship skills.

Two years ago, Nanci led a HorseGrooms MeetUp in Wellington, Florida, about the pros and cons of different barn management and grooming practices. Participants compared their experiences and discussed subjects such as hay nets, bandaging, water buckets versus automatic waterers, and the reasons behind different systems.

Last season, Nanci joined us for another MeetUp with a similar goal. However, the conversation naturally developed into something deeper. Attendees began speaking openly about the challenges they were experiencing in their work and supporting one another through shared experiences. Because the conversation was not recorded, people felt comfortable sharing more honestly. It became a true community conversation and was deeply appreciated by those who attended.

For our August 25 conversation, Nanci has prepared a new list of topics focused on how barns and grooming teams are run. These topics will provide structure to the conversation while allowing everyone to share their own experiences, questions, challenges, and ideas. Some subjects may lead to practical tips, while others may open a deeper conversation about communication, workload, stress, or feeling supported within a team.

What Will We Discuss?

Nanci has prepared a list of topics to give the conversation structure and direction. We may discuss:

  • What makes a barn well run
  • How communication works within different teams
  • Whether each groom cares for specific horses or the entire team shares responsibility for all horses
  • How many different roles grooms are expected to perform
  • Phone use in the workplace
  • Which parts of grooming or barn management cause the most stress
  • What we enjoy about our work and what we would change if we could

We may not cover every subject. If the conversation naturally leads to something that feels more important to the group, there will be room for that too.

This Is an Interactive Conversation, Not a Formal Webinar

Attendees are invited to share their own experiences, ideas, and questions. Together, we will compare different approaches, discuss the reasons behind them, and learn how other barns and grooming teams operate.

The conversation will not be recorded, helping us create a comfortable environment where people can speak openly and freely. We ask everyone to respect the privacy of the other participants, speak from their own experience, and be honest but respectful when discussing people or workplaces.
