At HorseGrooms, we spend a lot of time talking about horse welfare, horsemanship, education, and the importance of good daily care. We talk about grooming techniques, stable management, feeding, tack fit, first aid, training, and the many small details that can make a big difference in a horse’s life.
Brooke USA shares those same values.
But their work takes place in a very different world.
Many of us work with sport horses, breeding horses, or pleasure horses. The horses, donkeys, and mules Brooke USA supports are often working animals in the truest sense of the word. In many communities around the world, these equines are not only companions or athletes. They are essential for survival.
They carry water to villages. They transport food and goods. They help families earn an income. They make it possible for children to get to school and for communities to access healthcare and basic necessities. Without these animals, many people simply could not survive.
That is why HorseGrooms is incredibly excited to host a special educational presentation for the HorseGrooms Community with Kendall Bierer, Donor Relations Officer for Brooke USA, on Monday, June 8th at 7pm EST. A replay will also be available after the event.
A Different Perspective on Horse Welfare
At HorseGrooms, we believe horse welfare is about much more than ribbons, results, or expensive equipment. Good horsemanship starts with understanding horses, observing them carefully, and doing the best we can for them within our circumstances.
That is also what makes Brooke USA’s work so powerful.
Their mission focuses on significantly improving the welfare of working horses, donkeys, and mules and the communities who depend on them for survival worldwide. Brooke USA supports sustainable equine welfare through veterinary care, education, access to resources, poverty reduction, food security, clean water initiatives, and long-term community-based solutions.
What deeply resonates with us is the understanding that horse welfare and human welfare are often connected. Healthy animals help communities thrive, and educated, supported people can provide better care for their animals.
This presentation will give our community a chance to look beyond the showgrounds and see another side of the equestrian world, one that many horse people rarely get to see firsthand.
Creativity, Resourcefulness, and Horsemanship
One of the things we are especially excited about is Kendall’s practical and inspiring approach to education.
During the presentation, she will share how people in resource-limited areas create grooming tools and horse care products from materials many of us would simply throw away. It is innovative, resourceful, and honestly quite humbling.
In a world where the horse industry can sometimes become very focused on expensive products and trends, this is a powerful reminder that good horse care is not about luxury. It is about knowledge, compassion, observation, creativity, and commitment.
We believe many people in our community will walk away from this presentation inspired not only by Brooke USA’s mission, but also by the incredible resilience and horsemanship of the people they work with around the world.
Supporting Horses and People Who Need It Most
As a community, we also feel it is important to learn about and support people and animals who genuinely need help.
Brooke USA is doing meaningful work that deserves attention and support, and we are honored to help share their story with the HorseGrooms community.
Kendall will also explain how people can contribute to Brooke USA’s mission. And that does not only mean donating money. There are many ways to support, advocate, educate, volunteer, spread awareness, and become part of positive change for working equines and the communities who depend on them.
Brooke USA’s Work in the United States
While much of Brooke USA’s work takes place internationally, they are also involved in important projects within the United States.
We were especially touched by Brooke USA’s recently launched Native American Equine Welfare Initiative, which focuses on improving equine care, veterinary access, farrier education, and economic opportunities within underserved reservation communities in the Northern Plains. The initiative recognizes the deep cultural and practical importance of horses in these communities and aims to create sustainable, community-led equine care solutions.
Programs like this beautifully reflect Brooke USA’s belief that healthy animals and thriving communities go hand in hand.
