What Does the Science Really Say About Equine Joint Supplements?

Choosing the right joint support product for your horse can be overwhelming. During a recent HorseGrooms webinar, board-certified equine sports medicine veterinarian Dr. Christopher Elliott explained why evidence matters, why today’s understanding of joint health is changing, and how horse owners and grooms can make more informed decisions together with their veterinarian. Read a preview here, or become a HorseGrooms Insider to access the full webinar replay, presentation, and comprehensive summary.

One of the biggest takeaways from Dr. Christopher Elliott’s latest HorseGrooms webinar wasn’t about a specific product. It was about learning how to think differently about joint health.

Walk into any tack shop or browse an online feed store, and you’ll find dozens of products claiming to support your horse’s joints.

Some promise to rebuild cartilage. Others reduce inflammation. Many contain a long list of ingredients with impressive scientific names. With so many options available, it’s easy to assume that more ingredients mean a better product.

But is that really true?

That was the question explored by Dr. Elliott during his latest HorseGrooms webinar, The Science Behind Equine Joint Support: What Does the Evidence Say?

Rather than recommending specific brands, Dr. Elliott challenged attendees to look beyond marketing and ask a much more important question: What does the scientific evidence actually tell us?

A Different Way of Looking at Joint Health

For years, many joint supplements have focused on providing the “building blocks” of healthy cartilage.

Today’s research is taking a different approach.

Modern veterinary medicine increasingly recognizes that osteoarthritis is much more than worn cartilage. It is a complex inflammatory process involving the entire joint. That means supporting long-term joint health isn’t simply about adding ingredients. It’s about understanding what is happening inside the joint and choosing treatments based on evidence rather than advertising.

One of the most memorable moments of the webinar was Dr. Elliott’s simple analogy. Imagine trying to fill a bucket with water while there’s a large hole in the bottom. You can keep pouring water into the bucket, but until you fix the leak, you’ll never solve the problem. Joint health works in much the same way.

Read the Label, Not Just the Brand Name

Another practical takeaway was surprisingly simple. Many horse owners recognize product names, but few know exactly which active ingredients those products contain. Dr. Elliott encouraged attendees to spend less time looking at marketing claims and more time reading ingredient labels.

Understanding what you’re actually giving your horse is the first step toward making informed decisions together with your veterinarian.

As Dr. Elliott explained during the webinar:

“It’s important to know what you’re actually giving your horse. Everyone wants to support their horse’s joints, but not all joint support products are created equal.”

Evidence Matters

One of the most valuable lessons from the webinar was that not every ingredient is supported by the same quality of research. Some products have been studied extensively. Others have very limited evidence despite their popularity.

That doesn’t necessarily mean a product doesn’t work. It simply means the scientific evidence behind it may be stronger, weaker, or still evolving.

Understanding that difference helps horse owners, riders, trainers, and grooms ask better questions and make better decisions.

What Else Did Dr. Elliott Cover?

During the webinar, Dr. Elliott discussed topics including:

  • How veterinarians evaluate scientific evidence
  • The differences between oral supplements and injectable therapies
  • Why inflammation plays such an important role in joint health
  • Which commonly used ingredients currently have the strongest scientific support
  • Why some long-standing supplement ingredients are receiving less support from current research
  • How veterinarians decide when a horse may benefit from joint support
  • Questions every horse owner should discuss with their veterinarian

The webinar also included a live Q&A, where attendees asked about topics such as hyaluronic acid, injectable therapies, plant-based ingredients, and when horses should begin joint support.

** As for all products you are using for your horses, whether treats, topicals, medication, supplements, etc.: check with the FEI or your national federation if the products are competition safe.
